Clara Ward (April 21, 1924 – January 16, 1973) was an American gospel artist who achieved great success, both artistic and commercial, in the 1940s and 1950s as leader of The Famous Ward Singers.
A gifted singer and arranger, Ward took the lead-switching style used by male gospel quartets to new heights, leaving room for spontaneous improvisation and vamping by each member of the group while giving virtuoso singers such as Marion Williams the opportunity to step forward in songs such as “Surely, God Is Able” (among the first million-selling gospel hits), “How I Got Over” (which she wrote; one of the most famous songs in the Black gospel repertoire), and “Packin’ Up”. Shane was one of the most popular singers in Toronto’s thriving R & B scene of the mid-sixties. He was a remarkable figure for his day: he was openly gay and a cross dresser with a flair for fashion. Shane’s magnetic charisma and passionate performances made him a favourite of a generation of Toronto club goers.
This first-ever biography sheds some light on an important figure and time in Toronto’s music history. Interviews with Jackie’s friends and band mates detail his influence on a generation of musicians and performers, and speak of a legacy which extends beyond the realm of music.

WIKI: It is a remake of the 1939 classic comedy The Women. Both films are based on Claire Boothe Luce’s original play. The 1956 musical was directed by David Miller and stars June Allyson, Joan Collins, Dolores Gray, Ann Sheridan, Ann Miller, Leslie Nielsen, Jeff Richards, Agnes Moorehead, Charlotte Greenwood, Joan Blondell, Sam Levene, Dick Shawn, Jim Backus, Bill Goodwin and Harry James.
The story concerns Kay Hilliard (June Allyson), a former nightclub singer who discovers her husband Steven (Leslie Nielsen) is having an affair with showgirl Crystal Allen (Joan Collins). Kay is the last to find out among her circle of gossiping girlfriends. Kay travels to Reno to divorce from Steve who then marries Crystal, but when Kay finds out that Crystal isn’t true to Steve she starts fighting to win her ex-husband back.
Unlike its predecessor, the cast includes male actors to play husbands and boyfriends, whose characters were only referred to in the previous film and stage versions. This alters the structure and tone of the base storyline significantly.
rare & never published 1971 pictures of little richard from LIFE magazine
LIFE: Movie stars like Liz Taylor and Sophia Loren could be, and frequently were, celebrated in LIFE for their sex appeal, appearing on the magazine’s cover striking poses and wearing outfits that were, if one squinted just right, downright salacious. But let rock and rollers cross that invisible line between Hollywood’s idea of the erotic and the delightedly raunchy approach to the topic taken by, say, Zeppelin, and the latter’s chances of showing up in LIFE sank very close to nil.
All of which makes the Little Richard photographs in this gallery, taken by LIFE’s Ralph Morse in 1971, all the more fascinating, and mysterious. None of these pictures ever ran in LIFE, and there’s no indication in the LIFE archives of why they were taken in the first place. Morse, for his part, doesn’t remember making them (“I have no idea who that guy is,” he recently told LIFE.com, when shown a few of the photos), which suggests that they might have been part of an impromptu photo shoot — perhaps at the Time & Life Building in New York, maybe backstage at a concert — and that they were never meant to appear in the magazine at all.
What’s certain is that, four decades after they were made, these portraits of the Macon, Georgia, native — published here on Little Richard’s 80th birthday, December 5, 2012 — capture at least a small part of the unnerving and somewhat unhinged charisma of the man many credit as the true originator of rock and roll. (Little Richard, his backers argue, was the first, true, living, breathing, screaming bridge between R&B and rock.)

The photos were taken in 1916 to help promote The Evil Eye at Princeton’s Triangle Club. Fitzgerald was in his third year at Princeton when the musical-comedy troupe performed the bawdy lyrics penned by the future Great Gatsby writer.
In a review of his performance, the Times referred to Fitzgerald as “the most beautiful” girl in the whole production.

A 1991 short musical film directed by the very talented Bob Frame at a nightclub in the West 40s in Manhattan, starring Lypsinka (John Epperson).
Here are excerpts from the stage musical BALLET OF THE DOLLS, produced by TWEED TheatreWorks at The Pyramid Club during its heyday, December 1985. With book, music and the worst lyrics of all time by John Epperson (Lypsinka), directed by the late, talented Andy Rees, and starring John Kelly, Michael Berube, Meryl Goodfader, Stephen Pell, Mark Oates, Dan Taylor, Marleen Menard, Joey Smith and Billy Basinski, the show was an idiosyncratic amalgam of the book and movie versions of Jacqueline Susann’s masterpiece VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and the ballet world (at the time Epperson was entrenched as a rehearsal pianist at American Ballet Theatre). The show played only 6 performances in December 1985, and was revived in a different version at La MaMa ETC in 1988. This is the original 1985 version.
This is the promotional video for the stage musical DIAL ‘M’ FOR MODEL, originally produced by L.K. Aubrey for TWEED TheatreWorks at The Pyramid Club in the fall of 1986. The show subsequently moved to the cabaret at La MaMa ETC in the spring of 1987. This video was filmed at La MaMa. The show was intended to evoke a kitschy 1960s comic book style, yet performed live. Rick Colantino was a drag performer as Dorian Wayne, mainly in the late 1950s/ early 1960s. He worked at 82 Club and elsewhere. He starred in She Man, 1967, as a drag-dominatrix who blackmailed others into feminization; The Blue Sextet, 1971, and The Doors of Jessica Prine. 1976.
He then became a dresser and worked on Broadway until retirement.
Originally made for Drag Show Video Verite 2008, this experimental documentary short has since played over half a dozen film festivals world wide and been nominated for a Pill Award for best documentary and best director (short– doc or narrative).

One of Niagara County’s historical attractions apart from the Falls is really not an attraction at all, but more like a family sensation. Calling Cambria, New York their home, The Seven Sutherland Sisters were world-famous for their incredible hair, which reportedly had a collective length of 37 feet. It is said that the siblings’ mother, Mary Sutherland, applied an ointment on the young girls’ hair to stimulate growth. Their classmates often complained of the offensive odor.
The Sutherland children were all musically inclined and performed around New York State as the “Sutherland Concert of Seven Sisters and One Brother.” In 1881, they entertained at the Atlanta Exposition in Georgia. Around 1884, when the Sisters were traveling with Barnum and Bailey’s “Greatest Show on Earth,” their father, Fletcher Sutherland, realized that crowds flocked to see the girls’ long hair more than their singing talents. He mixed together a liquid concoction that he called “The Seven Sutherland Sisters Hair Grower.” He sent a bottle to a chemist for an analysis and received the following testimonial: “Cincinnati, Ohio, March, 1884: – Having made a Chemical Analysis of the Hair Grower prepared by the Seven Long Haired Sisters, I hereby certify that I found it free from all injurious substances. It is beyond question the best preparation for the hair ever made and I cheerfully endorse it. — J.R. Duff, M.D., Chemist.”
The Seven Sutherland Sisters Corp. bottled and distributed the Hair Grower from New York City and sold $90,000 worth of product the first year. They soon added a Scalp Cleanser, a Seven Sutherland Sisters Comb and eight shades of Hair Colorators. After achieving world-wide fame in 1893, the Sutherland Sisters spared no expense when building their new mansion on the Ridge Road just west of Warrens Corners. The house had 14 rooms, a marble lavatory with hot and cold running water, a turret, cupola and peaked gables, beds imported from Europe, black walnut woodwork, hardwood floors, massive chandeliers, as well as an attic room for the cook and maids.
On January 24, 1938, the mansion burned to the ground, taking many relics of The Sisters’ glory days with it. The Sutherland family lived lives of extreme excess, and even though they earned millions of dollars in their lifetimes, they all died destitute of their riches.
