DANIEL NORRIS… BEARDED BASEBALL PLAYER with 2 million dollars & a van named SHAGGY. (via michelle s)
Meet the pro baseball player who lives in a van. Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Daniel Norris opts for life on four wheels…
NP: Daniel Norris was 18 years old and fresh out of high school in 2011 when the Toronto Blue Jays gave him US$2-million to sign a pro contract. Like many newly rich prospects, he immediately bought his dream ride. He had craved it since childhood: a 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia microbus, known as a hippie van back in the day.
Norris named it Shaggy, after the Scooby-Doo cartoon character. It is stuffed with gear, including a couple of surfboards, and he lives in it for weeks on end, driving from one surfing spot to the next when baseball is not in season, popping the roof and curling up in the overhead bunk bed at night.
That’s how he made the trip from his home in Johnson City in the Tennessee mountains to Dunedin, Fla., where the Blue Jays hold spring training. He arrived Jan. 22 (“I wanted to let the coaches get their hands on me early,” he says), and lived in the van for a month after hitting a half-dozen surfing spots along the U.S. east coast on the way.
