R.I.S.T. spect: The ARISTOCRATIC COFFEE SHOP (& RISTY) in Vancouver
When I lived in Vancouver (from 1978-1982) The Aristocratic always fascinated me… especially at night when the neon lights would magically light up the dark wet streets. I went there maybe only a dozen times or so… but god I loved it with all the Daniel Clowes-like characters that would sit there for hours smoking, drinking coffee & eating pie. It was replaced in the late 90s by a Chapters bookstore. For some reason I thought about it today and obsessively looked for pics… and here’s what I found. For some reason I always thought “Risty”, the monocled dapper gent was also neon… with a movable tipping top hat. But I was dead wrong… apparently he was only a simple still image. Sometimes the mind remembers things in an extremely vivid fantastical way. The past seems all an illusion now.
