“you’re doing it to yourself” @ theft by deception

“Today I sat down with my hair stylist and told her how I wanted my cut to look. I went on my usual spiel and finished off by telling her that I didn’t want a mushroom and that for some reason I always end up with one anyways. We made eye-contact via the mirror and she said something that really changed me: “you get them because what you’re asking for IS a mushroom cut, you’re doing it to yourself.” I repeated her in disbelief- I’m doing this to myself? Of course, I whispered. I get mushroom cuts because I ask for them. I think I want something completely different but inadvertently communicate my true desires. As she chopped away at my hair I started to imagine the other things in my life that I think I’m unhappy with that I could be doing to myself. Take being single, which is not something I want, although I’m clearly asking for it. The list goes on, really, but I can sum this up real quick by saying the heart always communicates what it wants and that I should be more open to listening, even if it’s begging for seven days of personal space and a mushroom that can be finger curled.”
